My Thoughts On Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Although I had seen a little of Windows 8 via the Developer Preview, the Windows 8 Consumer Preview is my first real taste of the latest operating system from Microsoft. I decided to install it on a non critical laptop that I mostly use to remote desktop to one desktop machine or another, so I wasn't losing anything of great value if it all turned pear shaped.

From installation to how I am using Windows 8 Consumer Preview right now, here are a few thoughts of mine on the latest Windows installment.

Fast. Cheap. Good. Why You Can Only Pick Two

Fast Good Cheap

Fast. Good. Cheap. You Can Pick Only Two

And one of the two you should always pick is "good".

Too often, too recently, and too many times have I either been directly affected by such a decision, or have born the brunt of having to work with a decision that's been made when trying to create something, such as software, where a choice has had to have been made between making it quickly, cheaply, or doing it well. You can only ever pick two. Unfortunately most people think you can pick fast and cheap, and that then making a good product will be fluked our will somehow just happen. It never does. Never.

Entering the Age of ‘Why’

“Where are you going Daddy?” my nearly 2 and a half year old daughter asked me.

“To work.” I replied.

“Why?” she asked.

dreamweaver runtime error

So my issue started with some bizarre hardware errors that just suddenly appeared on my workplace PC having just returned from the Christmas / New Year break. For the record, a Windows 7 64bit machine, 4GB RAM, running Adobe CS5 Master Collection.

Ultimately I needed to perform a System Restore, as I thought maybe that some automatically applied updates had caused the error (my computer was on whilst I was away, and our work policy is to have some Windows updates applied automatically. I was pretty keen to get back up and running at this point). Whilst the System Restore seemed to fix most of my issues, I decided to run a Malware scan through the machine also, which detected and subsequently removed one trojan, the name of which I cannot recall.

The Good Ol’ US of A

Cloud Gate, or the Bean

Having spent about 5 of approximately the last 12 weeks in the US (and a bit over a week in Toronto, Canada) I feel I am now an expert on all things American.

I have been back home now long enough to muse on my experiences and gather a few thoughts together. They were a scramble of random events and feelings before, and now they are a scramble of ordered events and feelings. Small steps are still steps in the right direction.
